The Zimbabwe Program: Dual-Purpose Poultry Rearing

Project Summary

The World Poultry Foundation (WPF) is supporting private-sector poultry companies to produce and sell low-input, dual-purpose chickens under the African Poultry Multiplication Initiative (APMI). This program, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, sells chickens to rural households in Nigeria, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, among others, as a way to increase farmers’ income and dietary diversity. These chickens are hypothesized to be more productive than local breeds: they gain weight more quickly and produce more eggs, yet they exhibit lower rates of mortality while requiring minimal resources for daily upkeep.

In all, we were able to interview 363 farmers out of a total list of 420 representing a success rate of 86.4%.
