Climate Change Adaptation

Evidence and Gap Map of Climate Change Adaptation Interventions for Enhancing Food and Nutrition Security and Livelihoods in Sub-Saharan Africa

Background

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), agriculture is a vital source of livelihood for many, employing over half of the region's workforce and significantly contributing to its economy. However, agriculture in SSA faces increasing vulnerability to climate change impacts, including shifts in rainfall patterns, extreme weather events, rising temperatures, and changes in pest and disease distribution. To address these challenges, climate adaptation strategies in agriculture are crucial to building resilience and ensuring food security and livelihoods in the region. Recent research has focused on exploring adaptation options such as agroforestry, conservation agriculture, water harvesting, improved crop varieties, and livestock management practices across diverse agro-ecological zones in SSA. Despite valuable insights from these studies, the existing evidence is fragmented, making it challenging for decision makers to utilize effectively. An Evidence and Gap Map (EGM) analysis offers a systematic approach to collating, organizing, and analysing existing literature on climate adaptation agriculture interventions in SSA. This analysis will inform policy makers, researchers, and funders about areas needing attention and guide investments for designing and implementing effective interventions tailored to the region's context.

The International Centre for Evaluation and Development (ICED), funded by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation), will develop an EGM for climate change agriculture adaptation interventions or strategies for countries in SSA.

The Goal

The overall objective of this research study on climate change adaptation is to identify, map, and provide an overview of existing evidence and gaps on climate change adaptation interventions for enhancing food security and livelihood. At the end of the project, ICED will develop an Evidence and Gap Map (EGM) on climate change adaptation strategies in SSA and how these strategies enhance food security and livelihood. Additionally, through the synthesis of the data from the EGM, ICED will develop decision-making tools for easy access by policy makers.

The Global MLE Consortium

This MLE project has been activated through a global consortium of partners. The consortium of partners spread through five geographical regions of world (i.e., Southeast Asia, Europe, South and East Africa, and West Africa) where the foundation has relevant targeted initiatives with each partner focusing on activities of the project within the geography where the partner is located and has lived experience
Sankofa Consulting, a Seattle-based MLE organization with rich history with BMGF, will coordinate the consortium of partners
The International Centre for Evaluation and Development (ICED) is the main research partner for East and Sub-Saharan Africa
Sambodhi is the main research partner for South Asia. It is based in Uttar Pradesh, with other offices in Phnom Penh and Dar-es-Salaam
Haskè Conseil is the main research partner for West/Francophone Africa. The company is based in Senegal.
