Florence Muhanguzi Kyoheirwe is an associate professor of women and gender studies at Makerere University. She is also a Senior Researcher with expertise in interdisciplinary, gender, and feminist research in the fields of climate change and agriculture, and social development covering education, sexuality, sexual and reproductive health, women’s empowerment and gender-based violence.
She holds a Ph.D. in Gender Studies, as well as an M.A. and Postgraduate Diploma in Demography. Dr. Muhanguzi’s first degree was in social sciences with a specialization in sociology and economics. She has over 20 years of experience in both quantitative and participatory qualitative research and policy engagement and has worked on multi partner projects. She has been a Principal Investigator (PI) and project leader on several research projects, including those with an RCT research design and Project Level Women’s Empowerment Agricultural Index (pro-WEAI) implementation. She is the PI for the ALL-IN Uganda Project on: “Strengthening Women Smallholders’ Resilience to Agricultural Shocks for Enhanced Income Diversification and Empowerment in Uganda”. Florence is also the PI on Uganda’s government-funded project—under the Makerere Research and Innovations Fund—named Gender and Utilization of Briquettes as a Replacement Fuel for Charcoal and Firewood in Uganda, and a co-PI on the International Development Research Centre’s (IDRC) Growth Opportunities for Women (GrOW) project: “From Promises to Actions: Shifting Gender Norms and Public Perceptions about Unpaid Care Work in Workplaces and Families in Uganda”, among others.
Florence has authored more than 20 publications in refereed journals and books. She is also a gender trainer, an activist, and passionate about empowerment of women and adolescent girls.
