Major Attractions in Accra, Ghana

Ghana is filled with beautiful tourist attractions that participants can visit, all within Accra, including the following:

  1. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, built to honour Ghana’s first President which showcases his legacy and contributions to independence
  2. The Osu Castle (Fort Christiansborg), a historic fort with a complex past
  3. The Jamestown Lighthouse
  4. The Independence Arch
  5. The Black Star Square (Independence Square) where significant national events and celebrations are hosted
  6. The Accra Zoo, home to a vast representation of Ghana's rich wildlife, flora and fauna
  7. The National Museum of Ghana
  8. The Arts Centre
  9. Beaches — the best locations for daytime relaxation, like white sands Bojo Beach, and vibrant night life, like Labadi & Laboma beaches.

Shopping and Restaurants

There are several supermarkets and two main open food and grocery markets in the University community serving mainly students and staff. The All-Needs supermarket located towards the south of the campus in the banking hub of the University is stocked with a wide range of general goods and groceries. The Tasty treats restaurant and other restaurants in all the halls of residents serve a wide range of both local and continental meals to the University community. When it comes to shopping centres around Legon, there are three notable options: Legon City Mall, Accra Mall and the A&C Mall offering Shopping, dining, entertainment options, banking services and health clinics.

Transportation

Ghana offers a variety of transportation options for both locals and visitors:

  1. Taxis ― Taxis are readily available everywhere. Passengers typically negotiate fares with drivers. Ensure you agree on the fare before starting your journey.
  2. Ride-Hailing Apps — Services like Uber and Bolt operate in Ghana's urban centres, offering convenient and safer alternatives to traditional taxis. Passengers can book rides through mobile apps, enjoy transparent pricing, and secure payments.
  3. Buses ― Public buses and private bus companies provide intercity transportation. Public buses are known as "long-distance" buses and connect major cities, while private companies offer more comfortable and scheduled services between popular destinations.
  4. Domestic Flights — Domestic airlines operate routes between major cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Tamale, offering a faster means of travel for longer distances. Domestic airports are equipped with basic facilities for passenger convenience.
