Dr. Thomas de Hoop is a trained development economist who oversees AIR’s international research and evaluation portfolio focused on food, security, agriculture, and nutrition. He has published widely on self-help groups in India, and education innovations in sub-Saharan Africa, including various randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, and systematic reviews. He was the co-principal investigator for the Evidence Consortium on Women’s groups, which examined the impact and cost-effectiveness of self-help groups in India and savings groups in Nigeria and Uganda. Currently, he is the principal investigator for a quasi-experimental study on the impact of savings groups in Nigeria and a randomized controlled trial of a technology-aided instruction program in Zambia. His climate change research combines remote sensing with survey data to examine how droughts and floods influence the impact of savings groups in Nigeria.
